slipcue

sending a spotify song to a friend on apple music

you need to hear this — and they're on apple music. a spotify link won't get you there on its own. here's what does, with slipcue and without it — and the same from apple music to spotify.

01 — the problem

why the link alone doesn't work

a song link belongs to the app it came from. a spotify link opens spotify — or spotify's website, if they don't have the app — not apple music, where they actually listen. and an apple music link wants apple music.

02 — without slipcue

the no-app ways

  • say the song. send the title and the artist, and they search apple music for it. it always works — it's just one more step for them.
  • a link page. paste the spotify link into song.link and send them the page it makes: one button for each music app, apple music included. free, nothing to install.

both are fine for a one-off.

03 — with slipcue

send it, and it opens in apple music

  1. pick where you listen, once. when you join slipcue you pick your music app — spotify, say. your friend picks theirs: apple music.
  2. tap share in spotify and pick slipcue. or copy the song's link and paste it into slipcue.
  3. pick your friend and add a note about why, if you like. send.
  4. it opens in apple music for them. slipcue finds the same song there, so it lands in their app — not a dead link, not a web page.

when they reply, the reply lives with the song — so the conversation stays where the music is.

04 — not on slipcue yet?

send it anyway

in slipcue, invite them instead of picking a friend, and send the song. slipcue hands you an invite link to send them by text or however you like.

when they tap it, they get the song: the artwork, the title, your note, if you chose to show it on the link, and one button for the music app their phone most likely has — on an iphone, apple music — with the others folded underneath. it plays straight away, with nothing to install first. when they join, the song's waiting for them in your thread.

already on slipcue together? hold a song in your thread and tap ↗ — it sends the song's link outside slipcue, to a group chat, say, and it opens the same way.

05 — in reverse

apple music to spotify

the same, reversed. in apple music, tap share on the song and pick slipcue, or copy its link and paste it. a friend on spotify gets it in spotify. song.link works in this direction too.

06 — the other music apps

youtube music, tidal, deezer, amazon music

slipcue sends between any two of the six: apple music, spotify, youtube music, tidal, deezer and amazon music. send from youtube music and it opens in tidal; send from deezer and it opens in spotify. no separate steps — it's the same send.

07 — playlists

and whole playlists?

slipcue sends songs, not playlists — it won't move a playlist from spotify to apple music. that's a job for a playlist-moving service. the one playlist slipcue makes is a mixtape you keep after the reveal, in apple music, tidal or spotify.

08 — questions

what people search for

“can I share a spotify song with someone who has apple music?”

yes — just not with spotify’s link on its own. send it with slipcue and it opens in apple music for them, or send a link page like song.link.

“can you send a spotify song to someone without spotify?”

yes. with slipcue it opens in their music app, whatever they use — and if they’re not on slipcue yet, their invite link plays it there straight away.

“if I send someone a song on apple music, can they listen on spotify?”

not from apple music’s own link — that opens apple music. send it through slipcue and it opens in spotify for them.

is slipcue free?

yes — free on the app store and google play, with no ads.
