slipcue

mixtape club — a theme, one song each

a music league that works on apple music too — and on spotify, youtube music, tidal, deezer and amazon music. start a mixtape with friends, pick a theme, and everyone adds one song. everyone listens in their own music app and votes, and nobody knows who picked what until the reveal.

01 — how it works

a volume, start to finish

  1. start a mixtape and invite friends. give it a name, then send the invite link however you like — anyone in the mixtape can invite more. it opens once three of you are in, and holds up to twelve.
  2. pick a theme. whoever started the mixtape sets it — “songs for a long drive”, “a track you’d play at 2am”. each new theme is a new volume.
  3. everyone adds one song. paste a link from your music app, and add a note on why it fits if you like. nobody sees whose is whose. there are three days to add songs.
  4. listen and vote. every song opens in your own music app. you have 10 points to spend on the others' songs — at least 1 on each song you pick, never on your own. two days to vote.
  5. the reveal. who picked what, each song's points and who voted for it, and which song got crowned. then whoever started the mixtape starts the next volume.

if fewer than three songs are in when time's up, that volume doesn't go to a vote.

02 — their own app

everyone listens where they listen

this is the part that's different. the friend on apple music hears every song in apple music; the friend on spotify hears it in spotify — the same six music apps slipcue sends to. nobody has to switch apps or sign up for someone else's. on an iphone with apple music, songs can play right inside slipcue once you connect it.

03 — after the reveal

keep it, send it, start the next one

  • keep it as a playlist. on apple music and tidal, when a mixtape is revealed, "keep this volume" makes it a private playlist in your library. spotify only lets apps you create yourself write playlists, so that one is an advanced path the app walks you through. youtube music, deezer and amazon music can't take a playlist from slipcue yet — every song stays in the reveal in the app, and each one opens in whichever music app you use.
  • send the tracklist. the reveal makes a tracklist page you can send anyone — the theme, the crowned song and the top three, with nobody's name on it.
  • start the next volume. whoever started the mixtape picks the next theme, and off you go again.
